VeeKay Toronto 2018 PM

Toronto, Ont., Canada (July 16, 2018) – Rinus VeeKay came back from a challenging race weekend at Road America to dominate as the 2018 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires made its annual trip across the Canadian border to the Streets of Toronto. The talented Dutchman scored pole position for both races and absolutely dominated the two races en route to significantly close the gap to the championship leader.

VeeKay kicked off the weekend in the very best way possible by topping the sole practice session of the weekend on Friday morning, followed by pole position for both races on the same day.

In Race 1, the 17-year-old was off to a great start and headed the field easily before a full-course-caution was deployed following a multi-car accident on the first lap. The KNAF Talent First driver was unfazed by another two full-course-caution periods to lead every lap on the technical street-course.

“It feels so great to get my third win of the season,” said the 2017 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda runner-up. “There was definitely a bit of chaos, but I had good restarts and was able to stay out of trouble. I want to thank Juncos Racing for the great job, without their efforts I couldn’t have pulled off the win today.”

Race 2 was mostly a repeat of Race 1, with VeeKay taking a commanding lead on the initial start until a full-course caution bunched the field back up on lap four. With yet another clean restart on lap 10, VeeKay quickly escaped the battle behind and would continue to pull away until a final full-course-caution came out on lap 28. As the green flag waved with just three laps to go, VeeKay was able to sustain tremendous pressure from behind to secure his fourth win of the season.

“I am so happy to sweep the weekend here in Toronto,” enthused VeeKay. “I closed the gap in the championship a lot so it’s getting really competitive now. I just can’t wait to get out again at Mid-Ohio and score more points."

With the dominant weekend in Toronto, VeeKay now sits just one point behind the championship lead with each driver dropping their worst score in the championship. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is next up with another double-header weekend on July 28-29.
