The past few weeks have been very busy with travel and trying to prepare for the 2014 season. It started in Sonoma, California where I was doing some driver instructing for a Cadillac customer program. After three days of riding in the passenger seat I was ready to do some driving of my own. From California I flew to Birmingham, Alabama for the Chris Griffis Memorial test at Barber Motorsports Park. We are planning on another season in the Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Championship with the goal of winning it! I joined Juncos Racing for the two-day test and actually grew up driving go-karts for the team owner, Ricardo Juncos, for three years when I was 10 years old. We won a lot of races and championships together so it was great to work with them again.
Pro Mazda was only allotted four sessions over the two days so there
wasn’t a lot track time. Right from the start the car was handling very well. We continued to work on different set-ups and continued to improve the car. I ended up being fastest in one session. It should have been more but there was a lot of traffic, it’s not an easy place to pass and there were quite a lot of cars, which is good! Unfortunately, in two of the three sessions a red flag ended the run before I had got a clear, fast lap on my new tires but we knew we had a quick car!
After the test we drove to Indianapolis for the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show. The show is usually about 5 minutes from my house in Orlando but they moved it to snow covered Indy this year. I’ve been chosen to be part of a new program called Rising Star Racing (RSR). It’s designed to help young Americans progress up the Mazda Road to Indy and eventually make it to the IndyCar Series. Neil Alberico and I are the only two young drivers chosen with the third, Josef Newgarden already in IndyCar. We were announced to the media at a press conference during the show. RSR plans to promote and market us as a group to attract potential sponsors. Here is the link to the story on their website: http://risingstarracing.com/191/ and also the link to an interview with Robin Miller from RACER Magazine that I did with Josef during the show: http://www.racer.com/video-newgarden-and-pigot-rising-star-announcement/article/326680/
New Orleans was the next stop on my trip. There’s a new track called NOLA Motorsports Park just outside the city where I completed a two-day test with Juncos Racing. Cooper Tires have changed the dimensions for the 2014 Pro Mazda front tire so our main objective was to learn how the new tire works. We tried lots of things and continued to make progress. I’m having a great time working with this team and we are very close to finalizing a deal to race for them next season. I have enclosed a couple of photos of their shop in Indy.
I have a bit of a break now until I’m back on the track. The cars are heading back to the shop where they will be completely stripped and rebuilt. Pre-season testing starts early February and then the first race of the WinterFest is at NOLA on February 21st. I have made the commitment to live in Indianapolis to be close to my new team. My family fully supports my decision and I’ll be moving there early in the New Year.
Wishing You and Your Families a Very Happy and Safe Holiday Season! Thanks for reading,
