Pro FM front suspension mounts - installation procedures
March 3, 2004
To
all pro FM dealers, owners/drivers, and teams:
We have now encountered 3 or 4 instances of problems concerning the fastners
which hold the forward leg of the lower A-arm to the tub. We have seen, or
heard of, two instances of the stud(s) loosening off, one instance of a bent
stud, and one loose stud that resulted in the stud eventually shearing off.
We have asked the Elan Motorsports Technology engineers to review the design,
the broken/bent parts, and some new cars and parts, as installed, then to
make a recommendation about the solution. This is their recommendation:
1) Clean the parts and threaded holes in the front chassis bulkhead thoroughly
with a product like contact cleaner or Brakleen. Dry thoroughly.
2) Reinstall the studs, with the original aluminum spacers, into the threaded
holes in the chassis bulkhead, using Loc-tite # 222 , with the recommended
activator # 7471, or a very near equivalent system. Do not use a product which
requires heat to release/remove. Make certain all surfaces on the tub and
spacers are clean and flat. Torque to 45 - 50 ft-lbs. Be extremely careful
not to round the hexes off the studs when torquing them. Allow for recommended
cure time for the Loc-tite before using the vehicle on track.
Please make this correction asap. If you have any questions or problems, contact
your Star FM dealer, or call Star Race Cars (818) 686-3350.
